Villanelle for A

The ocean widens, hiding her from view.
In my head, her image starts to fade.
And yet my love will always hold its hue.

It’s barely been a year now since she flew.
Only memories of her have stayed.
The ocean widens, hiding her from view.

I close my eyes and picture her anew.
The corners of my picture may have frayed,
And yet my love will always hold its hue.

Her eyes were such a lovely shade of blue
That my young heart had almost grown afraid-
The ocean widens, hiding her from view.

Oh, if I could but sail that ocean through!
But I would drown before the dear crusade.
And yet my love will always hold its hue.

My images fade like the morning dew,
And leave me once again within the shade.
The ocean widens, hiding her from view-
And yet my love will always hold its hue.
